WILLIAM WORDSWORTH (1770-1850) William Wordsworth was born in 1770 in Cumbria, a region characterized by wonderful landscapes. So Wordsworth spent a lot of time in nature when he was a child. After his studies, he went to France where he was in contact with the Revolution. He supported the ideas of freedom, independence and equality. However, later he went back to England because he was disappointed by the failure of the French revolution ideas. In this bad period, Wordsworth was helped by his sister Dorothy. She encouraged him in his poetic production. Moreover, in Dorset, Wordsworth met Coleridge and together wrote a collection called “lyrical ballades” in 1798. However, the most important edition of this collection was the second one, published in 1800. In this edition, Wordsworth wrote a preface (an introduction) which is considered the manifest of the Romanticism. Wordsworth was considered a theorist of the Romantic Movement because he described all the characteristics of the Romantic poem.
