LITERATURE IN THE 20TH CENTURY Since from its beginnings the 20th century offered a new literary scene . It was varied , prolific and revolutionary , if compared to the previous literary production The traditional features of Victorian literature were abandoned . Writers didn’t use the third person omniscient narrator , or well-structured and detailed plots any longer.The interest in realism and the faith in human progress were replaced by a new sense of uncertainty and relativism This was above all due to the spreading of new scientific theories and philosophical thoughts . First of all, Einstein’s theory of relativity (1905) that overwhelmed the past faith in objective reality and radically changed the concept of time and space , demonstrating that everything can be relative, according to the reader’s point of view. Then also the new Freud’s theories about psychanalysis began to move the attention from the concrete everyday world to the world of unconscious , giving importance to the inner self.
